Frequently asked questions about grease filler units

A grease follower plate (also grease follower lid) is a round plastic disc that is fitted precisely into the grease bucket and slides downwards with the falling grease level – like a piston in a cylinder. It prevents air from getting under the plate and air pockets forming during intake by the grease pump. Air bubbles in the grease impair lubrication and can block the grease gun. The follower plate is therefore mandatory on all grease pumps that work with a suction tube from the bucket (pneuMATO, ecoFILL, centraFILL, Bucket Greaser). The right size depends on the grease-bucket internal diameter.

Both are MATO hand-lever grease filler units for manual filling from the grease bucket. ecoFILL fills grease-gun cartridges (400 g pull-off) – one lever stroke fills the cartridge with grease bit by bit. centraFILL is designed specifically for centralised lubrication systems (CLS) – it has a CLS coupling to ISO 7241B DN6 / R1/4" for direct connection to the CLS lubricant container. The centraFILL therefore does not fill cartridges but pumps grease directly into the follower-plate container of the stationary lubrication system.

Measure the grease-bucket internal diameter (or ask your grease supplier) and compare it with the FO-series table: FO 5 for Ø 165–200 mm (5/10 kg buckets), FO 15 for Ø 255–282 mm (15/18 kg), FO 18 for Ø 265–285 mm, FO 20 for Ø 285–305 mm (20 kg), FO 25 for Ø 300–335 mm (25 kg), FO 40 for Ø 305–350 mm, FO 50 for Ø 385–410 mm (50 kg). All MATO FO models are designed for a suction-tube Ø of 40 mm – compatible with pneuMATO 55, ecoFILL and Bucket Greaser.

Most grease filler units (ecoFILL, centraFILL, Füllmeister) handle greases of NLGI class 000 to 2. NLGI 000–0 are very soft, flowable greases (fluid greases) – e.g. for centralised lubrication systems. NLGI 1 and 2 are the most common standard lubricating greases. NLGI 3 and higher (stiff greases) cannot be conveyed by most manual filler units, or only with difficulty – here the pneuMATO-fill with pneumatic pressure support is more suitable.

Füllmeister FG plus (stationary, €201–206): a simple manual grease filler unit with 50 cc/stroke – for stationary placement on the grease bucket. Fills cartridges by hand pump. Füllmeister FGZ Kombi (from €381): a more powerful version with a CLS coupling, down to –20 °C, 30 cc/stroke, a 2 m PVC grease hose NW 16 with a self-closing quick coupling. The Kombi can be used stationary or mobile and fills both cartridges and centralised lubrication systems via the CLS connection. Heavier and more robust than the FG plus, for professional continuous use.

The price advantage varies depending on the grease type and manufacturer, but as a guide: lubricating grease in 25 kg buckets typically costs 30–60 % less per kg than in 400 g cartridges (branded products). For an operation that uses 10–20 cartridges per month (4–8 kg/month), an ecoFILL-standard (€145.50) already pays off after a few months. With higher consumption, even the pneuMATO-fill pays for itself. Always ask the grease dealer about the specific price difference and compare it with the equipment investment.
