Frequently asked questions
about storage technology

The requirement arises from the German AwSV (Ordinance on Installations Handling Substances Hazardous to Water). As soon as you store fuels, oils or chemicals classified as water-polluting, an approved containment tray is required. As a rule the containment volume must be at least 10 % of the total stored volume, but never less than the volume of the largest single container.
PE is corrosion-free and ideal for acids, alkalis, AdBlue® and fuels. Steel containment pallets carry more load under mechanical stress from forklifts. Steel is the usual choice for workshops; PE suits chemical stores and outdoor areas.
Under AwSV § 24 the containment volume must be at least 10 % of the total volume of the water-polluting substances stored, and never less than the volume of the largest single container. Example: for four 200-litre drums (800 L in total) you need at least 200 litres. If in doubt, your local water authority will advise.
A containment tray sits beneath storage vessels and catches leaks. A filling station is a complete platform for active transfer – with gratings, drive-over ramps, pump and hose connections and an integrated containment function.
Hazardous materials storage units must be designed in line with TRGS 510: adequately ventilated, fitted with a containment sump, lockable and marked with hazard labels. Depending on the quantity stored, additional fire protection requirements apply – for flammable liquids a Type 30 or Type 90 safety cabinet to EN 14470-1 is usually mandatory.

Tips for making
the right choice

🔍 Match the material to the substance
Not every material suits every substance. Fuels, acids and solvents each call for specific materials – check the data sheet or ask our team.
📐 Calculate the containment volume before buying
The retention volume must exceed the largest single container – plus a safety margin for extinguishing water where flammable substances are stored.
🏗️ Combined systems save space
Barrel racks with an integrated containment sump, or filling stations supplied as a complete system, are often more economical and easier to get signed off by the authorities.
⚠️ Check AwSV compliance
Not every low-cost tray meets AwSV requirements. Look for test marks and certification. All products at tankundlager.com are marked accordingly.
