What is the difference between a pull-off and a Lube-Shuttle cartridge?

Pull-off (400 g DIN 1284): standard format, compatible almost everywhere, the base is pulled off. Air bubbles possible. Lube-Shuttle: internal piston, completely air-free, a clean change, no grease loss. Only usable in Lube-Shuttle-compatible guns.

What do K2K-30, KP2K-30, KFP2K-30 (DIN 51502) mean?

K = lithium/calcium soap, P = EP additives (Extreme Pressure), F = solid lubricant (graphite), 2 = NLGI class 2, K-30 = suitable down to -30°C. KP2K-30 = lithium grease with EP, KFP2K-30 = lithium grease with graphite and EP.

When do I need EP additives in the lubricating grease?

For heavily loaded lubrication points with high surface pressure: joints, journals with impact loading, gears, sliding contacts. Without EP the lubricating film collapses under extreme pressure. Rule of thumb: where standard grease wears out quickly, use EP grease.

Can I use different grease types in the same grease gun?

Different soap types should not be mixed - when changing, empty and clean the grease gun completely. With Lube-Shuttle cartridges, the type can be changed without a complete cleaning, as the mixture in the nipple is minimal.

All grease types are available as a Lube-Shuttle® booster pack (air-free, a clean change) and/or as a 400 g pull-off DIN 1284 (standard, compatible with almost all grease guns). MULTI basic 2M is also available as a 500 g screw cartridge (for the DFP 500 PAT-SHV and Samoa guns).

Standard & EP greases

MULTI basic 2M (€7.85–9.88): a lithium multi-purpose grease for general lubrication points. MULTI PLUS EP-2M (€8.30–11): the same base, but with EP additives (Extreme Pressure) – for heavily loaded nipples, joints and gears with high surface pressures.

Graphite & high temperature

GRAPHITE 2M GR (€8.19–11): a lithium grease with a graphite solid lubricant, –30 to +130 °C (+150 briefly) – for lubrication points with heavy wear, joints under impact loading. HIGH TEMP EP-2L HT (€9.71, only Lube-Shuttle®): a lithium complex, –30 to +150 °C (+200 briefly) – for bearings on hot machines.

For heavily loaded lubrication points with high pressure and impact loading (joints, journals, pivot bearings, gears): MULTI PLUS EP-2M – EP additives (Extreme Pressure) significantly reduce wear at high surface pressure. For bearings and lubrication points near heat sources (furnaces, brakes, close to the engine, ceramic production plants): HIGH TEMP EP-2L HT – a lithium-complex grease, up to +150 °C continuously and briefly up to +200 °C. Standard lithium greases oxidise and fail at these temperatures.

Damp & water – PROTECT WR

For lubrication points in a damp, wet or water-flooded environment (agricultural machinery, construction, shipbuilding, outdoor bearings): PROTECT EP-2L WR – a calcium base with a semi-synthetic base oil, excellently water-resistant, is not washed out, EP additives for mechanical loading.

Self-filling – empty cartridge

Buy grease cheaply from the bucket and fill the Lube-Shuttle® empty cartridge (€1.20) yourself – with an ecoFILL or centraFILL filler unit. After filling, screw on the screw cap (€1.13). A significant cost saving compared to ready-made cartridges with high grease consumption.

Frequently asked questions about grease cartridges

Pull-off cartridge (400 g DIN 1284): the standard format, compatible with almost all grease guns. The base is pulled off (pull-off), the piston pushes the grease out. Cheap, widespread. Disadvantage: air bubbles can form when inserting. Lube-Shuttle® booster pack: a patented system with an internal piston – filled completely air-free. No grease escapes when inserting and removing. The cleanest cartridge change, no air bubbles in the line, less grease loss. Lube-Shuttle® cartridges can only be used in MATO Lube-Shuttle®-compatible guns. Pull-off cartridges fit almost all grease guns (Samoa, Pressol, MATO standard).

NLGI 2: a consistency class according to the National Lubricating Grease Institute – NLGI 2 is semi-solid, the most common class for grease nipples and bearings. K2K-30 (DIN 51502): K = calcium or lithium soap, 2 = NLGI class 2, K-30 = suitable down to –30 °C. KP2K-30: KP = lithium soap with EP additives (Extreme Pressure), 2 = NLGI 2, K-30 = down to –30 °C. KFP2K-30: KFP = lithium soap with a solid lubricant (F) and EP additives (P). The designation according to DIN 51502 therefore indicates the soap type, consistency and low-temperature behaviour.

EP additives (Extreme Pressure, also high-pressure additives) are chemical additives that activate under high surface pressure and temperature and form a protective reaction film on metal surfaces. They are necessary for: joints and journals with impact-type loading, slow-running bearings under high load, gears (hypoid gears), sliding contacts with high surface pressure. Without EP additives (as with MULTI basic), the lubricating film collapses under extreme pressure – wear and seizing are the result. As a rule of thumb: where standard grease wears out quickly, use EP grease.

High-temperature greases (HIGH TEMP EP-2L HT) often have a higher base-oil viscosity and different flow properties – at low temperatures they can be more viscous and not flow optimally to lubrication points. They are also considerably more expensive. For normal applications (up to +120 °C), the standard grease MULTI basic 2M is sufficient. Only use high-temperature grease where temperatures above +120 °C actually occur permanently – e.g. on oven bearings, brake-disc bearings or in metalworking. Standard grease would not be sufficient there, HIGH TEMP is absolutely necessary there.

Graphite grease (GRAPHITE 2M GR) contains finely ground graphite as a solid lubricant. Graphite has an extremely low coefficient of friction and forms a stable lubricating film even under extreme pressure and at high temperatures. Areas of application: brake linkages and brake cams (high pressure, heat), bolts and hinges with slow sliding movement, tractor PTO shafts, screw connections (assembly grease), joint bearings with impact loading. Not suitable for ball bearings – graphite particles can damage the raceway.

In principle, different grease types should not be mixed – different soap types (lithium, calcium, barium) and additives can react when mixed and impair the lubricating properties or cause the grease to soften. When changing the grease type: empty the grease gun completely and clean it thoroughly before the new grease is filled in. In practice, for different lubrication points, using different cartridges (Lube-Shuttle®) without cleaning the gun is sufficient – the mixture in the nipple is minimal and not critical in small quantities.
