Frequently Asked Questions
about Storage Technology

The obligation arises from the AwSV regulation. As soon as you store fuels, oils or chemicals classified as water-polluting, an approved spill containment tray is required – generally 10% of the largest individual container, but at least the volume of the largest packaging unit.
PE is corrosion-free and ideal for acids, alkalis and fuels. Steel spill trays have higher load capacity under mechanical stress from forklifts. Steel is recommended for workshops – PE for chemical storage and outdoor areas.
According to AwSV, at least 10% of the total volume of stored water-polluting substances, but at minimum the volume of the largest individual container. If in doubt, your competent water authority will advise.
A spill containment tray protects against leaks beneath storage containers. A filling station is a complete station for active handling – with grating, pump and hose connections and integrated containment function.
Hazardous materials depots must be designed in accordance with TRGS 510: adequately ventilated, with a spill containment tray, lockable and equipped with hazard labels. Depending on the quantity stored, additional requirements for fire protection and installation location apply.

Tips for
the right choice

🔍 Match material to stored substance
Not every material is compatible with every substance. Fuels, acids and solvents require specifically suitable materials – check the data sheet or ask us.
📐 Calculate containment volume before purchase
The retention volume must exceed the largest container – plus a safety buffer for extinguishing agents in the case of flammable substances.
🏗️ Combination systems save space
Barrel racks with integrated spill containment trays or filling stations as complete systems are often more economical and easier to get approved by authorities.
⚠️ Check AwSV compliance
Not all low-cost trays meet AwSV requirements. Look out for test marks and certifications. All products at tankundlager.com are labelled accordingly.
