What is AdBlue® / urea AUS32?
AdBlue® (also urea AUS32 or DEF – Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is an aqueous urea solution with 32.5% urea content, used in the SCR catalytic converters of diesel vehicles. It converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. Since the Euro 6 standard, AdBlue® has been mandatory in almost all diesel cars, trucks and construction machinery – consumption is around 4–8% of diesel consumption.
Stationary vs. mobile tank systems
Stationary tank systems (2,500–9,000 L) are the economical solution for haulage operations, fleets and farms with their own AdBlue® demand – a lower purchase price by IBC or tanker, plus their own refuelling infrastructure. Mobile tank systems (200–1,000 L, with pump and meter, on wheels or as a transport cube) suit construction sites, changing locations and smaller fleets.
Kingspan BlueMaster – STANDARD & PRO
The Kingspan BlueMaster tanks are the best-selling stationary AdBlue® systems in Europe. BlueMaster STANDARD: a simple, rugged solution without electronics. BlueMaster PRO TitanAccess: with a full fuel management system, user identification, consumption recording and an optional climate package for operation in frost – even when AdBlue® freezes at –11°C.
Special requirements for AdBlue® systems
AdBlue® is corrosive to copper, brass and zinc – all system components (pumps, hoses, fittings, nozzles) must be made of stainless steel or AdBlue®-resistant plastic (HDPE, EPDM). Separate lines, fittings and draw-off points from fuel are mandatory. The Elafix-40 magnetic adapter for the vehicle tank prevents mix-ups.
Planning your AdBlue® supply – the right solution for your operation
Drum, IBC or storage tank?
Drum/IBC (200–1,000 L): a flexible solution, no dedicated system needed – cost-effective for low demand. Downside: manual decanting, higher purchase price. Mobile system (200–1,000 L with pump): drum or IBC with an integrated pump and meter – for construction sites and changing locations. Stationary tank system (2,500–9,000 L): your own refuelling infrastructure, the lowest purchase price by tanker – economical from around 10 trucks or 2,000 L/month.
Why a climate package on the BlueMaster PRO?
AdBlue® freezes at –11°C – in frost the whole system can freeze and dispensing can fail. The optional climate package on the Kingspan BlueMaster PRO includes heating of the tank and the pump unit, so the system works reliably even in winter. For operations in regions with harsh winters, or for systems not housed in heated rooms, the climate package is indispensable.
Fuel management – why does it matter?
The Kingspan BlueMaster PRO TitanAccess system records every refuelling event: driver ID, vehicle, quantity, timestamp. This prevents misuse, enables precise cost allocation per vehicle or department and provides reports for the fleet manager. It is indispensable above all for haulage operations with many drivers. Data is stored locally and can be exported.
Which pump for which use?
Hand pumps: for occasional draw-off from a drum – cheap, no power supply. 12V DC pumps: for mobile systems on vehicles or construction sites – connected to the vehicle battery. 230V AC pumps: for stationary applications in the workshop or at the fleet base. Flow rates of around 35–60 L/min are sufficient for most car/truck refuelling – trucks have AdBlue® tanks of 20–75 L.
Material compatibility – what may AdBlue® touch?
AdBlue® attacks the following materials: copper, brass, zinc, galvanised steel – all parts coming into contact with AdBlue® must be made of stainless steel (V2A/V4A), HDPE, PP or EPDM. That's why all AdBlue® fittings, nozzles and pumps are specially marked and not compatible with brass fuel fittings. ISO 22241 sets out the material requirements.
Storage & shelf life of AdBlue®
AdBlue® has a shelf life of around 12–18 months when stored between 0°C and 30°C. At higher temperatures (above 30°C continuously) or in direct sunlight, urea breaks down faster. A maximum storage temperature of 35°C is recommended (ISO 22241). Storage tanks should therefore preferably be set up in covered, shaded areas. The climate package protects against frost, the right positioning against overheating.
